Exploring the Way Ahead for Hong Kong
Prof Larry Diamond, from Stanford University, on screen, and the panelists at the forum on Hong Kong’s democratic development.

A topical forum on “The Path to Democracy” was held by the HKUST Leadership and Public Policy Executive Education Office on campus in April.  At the forum, Prof Larry Diamond, Professor of Political Science and Sociology and Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, gave a lecture via video in which he discussed the current situation and the challenges facing Hong Kong within the global context.  Panelists included The Hon Anson Chan, Former Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Alex Chow, Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, Prof Ming Sing, Division of Social Science, HKUST, The Hon Jasper Tsang, President of the Legislative Council, and Dr Jieh Min Wu, Associate Research Fellow, Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. 

Prof Diamond’s presentation was followed by a response by each of the panelists and questions from the floor. Other topics raised included the Chief Executive nomination process, criteria for candidates, and the future of Hong Kong’s democratic development.  The panel was moderated by Prof Angelina Yee, Director, Leadership and Public Policy Executive Education, HKUST.
